How Parent Mentors Work with Families

TERRI'S TIPS

Parent Mentors share ideas and resources with one another on a daily basis. Terri Goodridge, mom of a young son receiving special education related services and a Bibb County Parent Mentor, files our parents’ tips in categories, so she can share information.

CRISIS RESPONSE

As I took the time to go through some of the more recent parent mentor emails, one of the re-occurring themes was about crisis response for individuals with developmental disabilities. It was touching, disappointing and in some cases, alarming, to read about other's experiences.

I hope that the information shared by others and the information I was able to research can help families and individuals who face the challenge of finding proper crisis response.

In this new year, let us not only set high goals for ourselves and our children, but also set higher expectation levels from providers. As people, we should all be able to get a high quality level of care; regardless of our disability.

Special thanks to Jerolee Oshack, our fellow Parent Mentor from Clarke County School district for sharing her and her son's personal story; which triggered this month's topic. Also a huge thank you to our wonderful Family Outreach Coach, Debbie Currere, for her advice, encouragement and providing links to some of the websites on the GDBHDD.

The issue of Crisis Intervention with the DD population is a complex and evolving issue. I did not feel comfortable or educated enough on this topic to offer any of my own personal advice. So, I have provided website links, articles, and agencies to review. I hope you find these useful.

The National Association of School Psychologists' website offers access to an extensive study on the issues surrounding crisis intervention with the developmental disabled population called: Delivery of Health Care for People with Dual Diagnosis: From the Person to the Policy.

>Discusses the challenges with how to effectively provide the care needed.

>Uses examples from Massachusetts and Tennessee as effective models for providing care and/or creating steps to improve care.
